They might not have a long-lasting presence in the World Rally Championship (having made a debut in 2012), but Hyundai Motorsport GmbH is our idea of an ambitious team.
Recently, they just finished a four-day testing stage in Spain, where their upcoming 2016 i20 WRC car received a set of tweaks that would improve engine and chassis development.
The i20 was driven around Almeria's roads by the team's test driver Kevin Abbring and his co-driver Sebastian Marshall, with Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul also offering their input on the racer's behavior. However, there's still a long road ahead until we'll see a final version ready to mount a serious challenge for the title.
According to Hyundai, both the engine and the chassis of the car underwent a series of upgrades compared to the WRC racer's current version, so it was vital for the team to see how the improved car would perform.
"We had a very detailed week of testing planned in Spain recently, as we put an upgraded version of our New Generation i20 WRC through its paces in the Almeria region. Kevin and Thierry worked on engine and chassis development, as well as altitude tests, which will help us to further develop the car as we move through 2015," said team principal Michel Nandan.
Hyundai Motorsport had plans to introduce the car later this season, but those goals were thrown off by a change in the homologation schedule. As a result, they had to focus on the five-door version of the WRC racer and reschedule its launch until next year, at the 2016 FIA WRC Rallye Monte Carlo.
