Better start taking a notebook whenever discussing the various brands of the Hyundai Motor Group, because just reciting Hyundai and Kia out of memory isn’t enough anymore. The conglomerate has already breached the premium market with Genesis a while ago. Now it’s on a trendy way towards building a sustainable mobility empire by branching out the upcoming IONIQ and HTWO sub-brands that will cater to both facets of the electric vehicle business.
From a South Korean manufacturer of affordable cars to a global powerhouse with interests across the entire board, and from the luxury segment down to both battery and fuel cell electric powertrains, Hyundai Motor Company’s story of success is still unfolding.

After we’ve discussed plans for introducing Hyundai and Kia’s first dedicated battery EV platform, the E-GMP, it’s time the former reminded us of its continued interest in fuel cell electric vehicles. The group recently held its “2020 CEO Investor Day” event, and one of the big announcements also concerned its updated “Strategy 2025.”

According to the reworked mid- to long-term roadmap, Hyundai aims to become a future mobility industry leader as it transitions into becoming a “Smart Mobility Solution Provider.”

The interests concern three pillars of development (smart mobility devices, smart mobility services, and H2), with four main areas of interest: EVs, the UAM (Urban Air Mobility) ecosystem, autonomous driving tech, and hydrogen fuel cell systems.

We already know that IONIQ will introduce its first model, the IONIQ 5, from early next year – and the Hyundai brand wants to have a fully electrified range across major global markets by 2040.

Now the company is also showing a renewed focus on its fuel cell technology. Most importantly, they have decided to leverage over two decades of FCEV experience and create a dedicated brand named HTWO.

Hyundai is also announcing it is ramping up development efforts of a new generation “hydrogen fuel cell system that can be applied to various forms of mobility such as UAM, automobiles, vessels and trains.”

Not only that, but it’s also going to arrive with enhanced performance and durability, a lighter footprint, as well as an affordable price point even though it will have better energy density.
