Hyundai Reveals RN30 Concept, A 380 HP Ode To Its Future Hot Hatch

Hyundai has revealed a spectacular concept in its stand at this year’s Paris Motor Show, and it is called RN30.

The exhibit is a racing version of the upcoming hot hatch designed by Hyundai N, the performance division of the South Korean brand. While not meant to become Hyundai’s contender in the 2017 WRC season, the RN30 is also not identical or close to the production model.

We do not know how far they have come from the 2017 Hyundai i30 N, but the exhibited concept vehicle will be wider and more extreme in aerodynamics and looks than the production model that will follow it.

The automaker already stated that the concept is 1,950 mm wide, which is 30 mm more than the production model. The car's height has been lowered by 84 mm, and the resulting value is 1,355 millimeters. The concept is said to be based on the next iteration of the hatchback, which has already been revealed.

Evidently, Hyundai has not gone mad, which means that there will be no vertical-opening doors on the production version inspired by the RN30, but the shape of the headlights, window line, and other styling elements will be present on the production model.

Hyundai says it fitted the RN30 with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that will provide 380 HP (297.5 kW), while the peak torque is rated at 451 Nm (332.6 lb-ft). The values have been obtained using a motor that is under development by Hyundai N, which has received a bigger turbo and forged internals.

At the moment, it is unclear whether the production i30 N will get this level of power, but we hope we will be surprised by the result of the Koreans.

Hyundai says that the RN30 features a wet-type dual-clutch transmission, which is meant to provide quick shifts and impressive response times. The DCT is mated to an all-wheel-drive system, to enhance grip in all situations that it can encounter.

We must note that we have observed that the concept vehicle has three pedals placed in front of the driver’s seat, so the exhibit that will be shown in Paris has a different configuration. It might also mean that someone made a mistake when assembling the concept vehicle, but we hope that the explanation is linked to the fact that the exhibit has a different transmission.

Hyundai’s RN30 comes with rev-matching technology, which is activated when the driver shifts gears while the car is in sport mode. The concept vehicle also features an electronic variable exhaust system, which opens its valves at certain times to allow more noise to be heard, while an eLSD system handles the traction. The latter is an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.
