Hyundai is tapping into the last mile mobility market with a prototype for an electric scooter that stands out from offerings from other carmakers in that it’s portable and can be mounted to your vehicle to charge.
In fact, the company says in a press release, the goal is to integrate it with future Hyundai and Kia vehicles, though it offers no estimated timeline for this. The Hyundai electric scooter is also lightweight and foldable, which makes it very portable and convenient as a last mile mobility solution. A video of it in action is also available at the bottom of the page.
Powered by a 10.5 Ah lithium battery, the e-scooter will only reach maximum speeds of 20 km/h (12 mph) and have a range of 20 km (12 miles). The bonus is that it can charge while you drive, as it can be mounted to your vehicle specifically for this purpose. Hyundai plans to boost the scooter’s range by 7% by installing a regenerative braking system.
With rear-wheel drive, the e-scooter includes suspension on the front wheel for a smoother, more stable ride. Other specs show it was designed as the perfect solution for last mile mobility, which makes it ideal in crowded urban environments where parking spaces aren’t always close to the destination point.
“Weighing around 7.7kg, the scooter is highly portable, while its unique and compact tri-folding design means it is lighter and more compact than any similar product,” Hyundai says. “Enhancing its usability further, it features a digital display that shows battery status and speed; while, for nighttime riding, the new scooter is equipped with two stylishly-curved front LED headlights, and two rear tail lamps.”
“This is the vehicle-mounted personal scooter that could be featured in future Hyundai Motor Group vehicles,” DongJin Hyun, head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics Team, says in a statement. “We want to make our customers’ lives as easy and enjoyable as possible. Our personal electric scooter makes first- and last-mile commuting a joy, while helping to reduce congestion and emissions in city centers.”
