It seems that airbags aren’t working as intended on cars these days. Hyundai is making another airbag-related recall, this time involving one of their smaller SUVs, as well as a sedan - the Santa Fe and Sonata.
Apparently, the sensor which detects whether or not a person is seated, in order to deploy the airbag in the event of a crash, doesn’t work properly. Apparently, people who weigh less than 50 kg (130 lbs) will not trigger the sensor, and thus, the airbag will not inflate.
The Korean manufacturer will be recalling around 200,000 Santa Fe SUVs, from the 2007 to 2009 model years, as well as 22,500 Sonata sedans from the 2012 and 2013 model years. The repair itself should be straightforward, as it only involves recalibrating the sensor to detect lighter loads on the seat.
