Hyundai Launches Groupon Promotion, Move a Hit

It has become a habit for automakers to sell their products and ideas in the online environment, especially after all have seen the wonders networks like Facebook or eBay can do for their businesses. Until this week, however, none of them dared venture into an entirely different portion of the web: deal-of-the-day websites. None, except one.

Hyundai, trying to bring much more customers to a brand that apparently doesn't stop growing in the US, launched a promotion on the Groupon website, offering customers who chose to come to a Hyundai dealership a $29 oil change, inspection and tire rotation. This was the first ever promotion launched by an automaker on the Groupon website.

The pilot program, as Hyundai calls it, hinting to possibly new offers, took place in the Chicago-area, and attracted no less than 1,323 shoppers. Hyundai says it will continue to monitor the promotion's long-term benefit and, if the numbers are pleasing, will begin advising the rest of the dealership network on “innovative tactics to build business.”

"We're always looking for innovative ways to build dealers' service business. Our Central Region team and a number of Chicago dealers recognized the power of Groupon to offer a compelling deal and generate new service leads," said Brian O'Malley, general manager of Hyundai Motor America's Central Region.

"Based on initial response, we can clearly call the pilot program a success in driving traffic. If the long-term results are as encouraging as the initial data and dealers are supportive, we'll certainly look at other ways to use Groupon in the future."
