Hyundai i40 Takes Top Euro NCAP Rating

The Euro NCAP released a new series of crash test results today, with the Hyundai i40 included on the list. The vehicle managed to perform well, scoring a five-star rating from the European safety watch dog. The car tested by Euro NCAP equipped with the 1.7-liter GLS diesel engine and is a five-door hatchback model.

The car got the maximum five-star rating, scoring 92 percent in adult occupant protection and 86 percent in child occupant protection.

As for the protection offered by the bonnet, this was predominantly poor or marginal. The front edge of the bonnet also offered mostly poor or marginal protection to pedestrians. Only the bumper scored maximum points, offering good protection to pedestrians' legs.

The vehicle also obtained high scores for child occupant protection. “Euro NCAP evaluates child safety for each model tested and encourages car manufacturers to provide equally good protection for adults and children. We consider child protection as a very important part of the overall star rating and have plans to step up our requirements even more in the coming years,” stated Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP Secretary General.

As for the active safety, the i40 is equipped with electronic stability control (ESC) as standard equipment. A driver-set speed limitation device is optional on low grades but its sales as standard equipment on higher grade models are exepcted to exceed Euro NCAP's 2011 requirements. A seat belt reminder is standard for both the driver and front seat passenger.
