Before 2017, the thought of having lots of fun in a Hyundai was absolutely unimaginable. But with the help of an ex BMW M engineer, the Korean automaker unveiled the N brand, with the i30 N being its premier product.
The i30 N appeals to your inner child and does a good job of competing with the Leon Cupra, Megane RS and Focus ST. However, Hyundai was actually gunning for Golf GTI clients though offering more power and features for less money.
Now, the normal i30 hatchback is a little bit boring and boxy, so Hyundai has decided to perform major cosmetic surgery to its face. The headlights have been streamlined around some LED beams while the bumper looks all modern, sporting a larger grille like that of the 2021 Tucson.
This prototype sports massive 19-inch wheels in black, behind which sit red brakes. Moving around to the back, we notice the big trunk spoiler with the triangular F1-style third light. Hyundai has seen fit to increase the size of the exhaust pipes on this facelift model. And while much of the tip is fake, we believe they'found a way to improve the soundtrack of the 2-liter engine.
Now, the i30 N's setup can be configured in a number of different ways and saved as presets on the steering wheel buttons. You can have sports exhaust with comfort suspension, and the car will even blip the throttle to make you look like a shifting hero. However, many hot hatch buyers just can't be bothered to row their own stick, so Hyundai is busy developing an automatic.
This has been promises since the launch of the N brand and will take the form of a twin-clutch developed in-house to cope with more torque and quick launches. We can only presume that this will be introduced during the facelift as well.
