Hyundai i30 Launched in China

Beijing Hyundai today launched the i30 hatchback in China, with the range comprising two different engines. Hyundai's joint venture in China is offering a 1.6- and 2.0-liter engine, both of them optimized for reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Lee Hyori, a popular South Korean singer and actress and Wilber Pan, a Taiwanese singer, both attended the launch event which, according to gasgoo.com, took place at the Beijing Science&Technology University.

In China, the i30 will be offered with a price tag of 99,800 yuan ($14,615), with the most expensive version to be priced at 141,800 yuan ($20,700). The company is aiming to sell approximately 40,000 vehicles per year, Noh Jae Man, Beijing Hyundai 's president, was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.

The European flavor of Hyundai i30 is offered in a choice of six engines, three gasoline and three diesels. The top of the range configuration is the 2.0-liter 16V petrol unit that produces 143 horsepower and 186 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm. This particular option pushes the i30 from 0 to 100km/h in 10.6 seconds and allows a maximum car of 127.3 mph (205 km/h). As for fuel consumption, the engine achieves 25.2 mpg (9.3 L/100Km) in city conditions and 39.8 mpg (5.9 L/100Km) on the highway.

Hyundai's Chinese operations are performing fairly well, with the South Korean carmaker claiming deliveries in the first eight months of the year grew by 78.2 percent to 351,528 units from 197,320 units in the previous year. Furthermore, Hyundai expects things to get even better in 2009 as it hopes to sell around 500,000 vehicles this year.
