Hyundai i20 Turbo Edition Launched in Britain, Is not Hot

Hyundai is proudly presenting the i20 Turbo Edition like it's a big deal. Not only is the company almost the last to arrive at the turbocharged party, but this edition doesn't even inspire the same emotions as the i30 Turbo.

The Korean automaking twins have been talking about forced induction for three years. Finally, you can buy such a thing with the i20 supermini. The engine in question is a direct rival for the Ford EcoBoost, as it delivers 100 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque.

With CO2 emissions of 104 grams per kilometer, it should be cheap but no free to tax. In this configuration, the i20 will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 10.9 seconds. Again, we can think of plenty of more appealing cars that will do the same thing.

There's no mention of any specific tuning going on, as all of Hyundai's efforts have been exhausted in the cash department. According to the official statement, the £12,975 pricetag is £1,050 less than the i20 with the same engine in SE spec.

If you didn't know this already, the i20 SE comes with DAB digital radio, cruise control, and a leather multifunctional steering wheel. The real selling points are the standard 7-inch sat-nav, reversing camera, auto headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.

Are there alternatives? Well, you might want to consider the similarly priced Suzuki Baleno, which is better than you might think and also comes with a punchy 3-cylinder turbo. The Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost starts at about £13,400, but you'll need to spend more to match this Hyundai's options.

The first i20 Turbo models will arrive in UK showrooms this month.
Hyundai will offer a free seven-year TomTom Live Services subscription to those who will opt for the car. However, we'd like to point out that the i20 might also be available with a 120 PS 1-liter engine later.
