It turns out Hyundai is still trying to come up with a rival for Toyota's Prius, as our team of spy photographers was again on the prowl, getting up close and personal with a pre-production test mule.
If we were to believe the circulating rumors, Hyundai's antidote for the Toyota Prius should show up in summer 2016, but since gossip about the hybrid vehicles has been around for around four years now, we'll take that with a pinch of salt.

Truth be told, pictures don't lie, and that goes the same for spyshots. In the recent batch sent in by our carparazzi, we can see the car's boot and cabin in detail for the first time.

The mule was spotted roaming in hot weather on US soil, but we still can't provide a name for the production version that will be underpinned by the 2016 Hyundai Elantra. From where we're standing, the interior is keeping things neat and simple. The instrument cluster is dominated by a central speedometer flanked by the fuel level gauge while the steering wheel has received buttons for various car functions.

The gear selector looks a lot like what Peugeot has to offer on the 208 and 308 hatchbacks, while the boot could provide sufficient cargo space for two large pieces of luggage and the backseat will only be comfortable for two, not three passengers.

On the outside, we expect to see LED daytime running lights. Regarding the hybrid powertrain, it could rely on a 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine working in association with an electric motor.

We'll come back with more info as soon as Hyundai lets some details slip through their PR voice.
