Koran automaker Hyundai simultaneously developed the new i10 to suit both the European and Indian markets, with prototypes developed to fit slightly different market niches. While the model created by the guys in Frankfurt is a city car, the one tested on the streets of New Delhi is called "Grand i10" and caters to the family car market.
The car went on sale in India back in September and demand has been through the roof. With over 35,000 units in a period of 90 days across the country, it's one of the best launches in Hyundai history. The cars merits have now been recognized through the first major award, the coveted Indian Car of the Year 2014 (ICOTY).
The Grand i10 won the award despite stiff competition from the Honda Amaze and Ford Ecosport. A jury of senior automotive journalists picked the Korean car because they found the i10 offered superior build quality and design flare.
Upon receiving the award, B. S. Seo, managing director & CEO, Hyundai Motor India, said, "We are honored to win the most prestigious automotive award - The Indian Car of the Year 2014. The Grand i10 is a world-class product developed for the Indian market, and the ICOTY 2014 marks its phenomenal success. The award symbolizes Hyundai's commitment to Indian customers by offering high standards of quality, durability and reliability. Grand i10 has consolidated Hyundai's position as a trendsetter and leader in the premium compact car segment. We are humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response and appreciation the model has received from customers, media and jurors. We thank our customers for making Hyundai Grand i10 a grand success."
Congratulating the winning car, Editor of BBC TopGear India and Chairman of the jury of the Indian COTY 2014 Girish Karkera said, "Nowadays manufacturers are getting so competitive with making cars that it gets very difficult to choose one car over the other. The differences are sometimes almost negligible and with our kind of fair voting system the verdict can go either way. Indian Car of the Year title is a respected one and I am happy to see a car as good as the Grand i10 now wearing the crown. In our collective votes it has come out on top as a wholesome product with that added flair that has tilted the verdict in its favor."
