Hyundai is looking to bring a breath of fresh air in the Genesis' engine department with a new twin-turbo V6 that will most likely drop in two or three years' time.
We already saw the all-new Hyundai Genesis Coupe undergoing winter tests in Sweden about two months ago, meaning that the 2015 Ford Mustang and 2016 Chevy Camaro should make room for a new rival.
However, Hyundai Motor Co. plans to go down the path of downsized and turbocharged engines, meaning that the Genesis sedan will receive a new twin-turbo V6 unit.
Interviewed by Autonews, Dave Zuchowski, CEO of Hyundai Motor America said the V6 will make a debut on the Genesis sedan, but not earlier than 2017 or 2018. At its introduction, the engine would sit on the same performance pedestal as Hyundai's 5.0-liter V8 thanks to a power output of around 420 HP.
There's a keyword Hyundai the official mentioned, and as you might suspect, we're talking about weight. The new V6 will be lighter than the TAU V8, which translates into better efficiency. In addition, several downsized and turbocharged engines will pave the way for the new V6, all with the same goal in mind: lower emissions and boosted fuel economy.
"We're going to go forward more broadly with that in the portfolio. You're going to see smaller displacement, more use of turbocharging. A lot of it is weight-related [...]," explained Zuchowski.
Two months ago, the internet saw Hyundai's 3.3-liter V6 GDI being detailed for the first time. Rumor had it that this unit will power the Genesis coupe and deliver an output of 365 HP and 379 lb-ft (514 Nm) of torque. The engine was fitted with tiny turbos designed to spin more rapidly and reduce lag.
