When Hyundai announced Genesis Motors as a standalone luxury brand back in 2015, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe was already old compared to its direct competitors. Now, though, eight long years after the first generation made its debut in 2008, the rear-wheel-drive coupe from Hyundai has called it a day.
Model year 2016, then, is our last taste of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Company officials have confirmed this information and, according to a report from The Truth About Cars, the next-gen model will be worth the wait. Trouble is, we’ll have to wait a long time for it to get here.

According to the Genesis Motors roadmap we’ve talked about in a previous story, the standalone brand has four more models in the pipeline. After the G90 and G80 (a.k.a. Hyundai Genesis sedan), the next in line are the G70 compact executive sedan, a mid-size luxury SUV, a compact SUV, as well as a “near luxury sport coupe.” Genesis G70 Coupe, maybe?

The latter model, which will probably be based on the upcoming G70 sedan, is expected to hit North American dealers by 2020. “A new, more sophisticated and luxurious coupe appropriate for the new Genesis brand is currently under development,” said Christine Henley of Hyundai Motor America to TTAC.

All things considered, Genesis Motors hasn’t outlined a definitive time-frame for bringing the successor of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe to market. It could be sooner than the calendar year 2020. Or not. But anyway, I’m looking forward to what's in store. Besides the nice design and premium appointments, the RWD coupe will also pack a fair share of performance.

The head honcho of the N performance division at Hyundai made it clear that Genesis Motors will get the go-faster treatment. So yes, a BMW M4-rivaling machine could very well be in the cards. Genesis Motors also wants to rock down to plug-in hybrid Electric Avenue [Eddy Grant pun intended].
