There are a lot of enticing options to choose from these days if you are in the market for a practical and affordable compact sedan. One such model comes from South Korea in the form of the Hyundai Elantra.
Presently at its fifth generation, the nameplate is a commercial success story for the Asian car brand and it's easy to understand why. It's cheap, it's not a big drinker, boasts with top-shelf reliability and it packs a lot of goodies even in its most basic of trims.

Whereas the European-specification model can be equipped with a super frugal four-cylinder turbo diesel, the US-spec Hyundai Elantra is propelled only by gasoline-fed mills - a 1.8 with 145 ponies and 130 lb-ft, as well as a more spunky 2L with 173 horsepower and 148 lb-ft for the Sport model.

Best of all? The range-topping Hyundai Elantra Limited is starting from $21,700 and in that money you get the six-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission and an EPA-rated 27 mpg city / 37 mpg highway.

Unless you're that little bit pretentious, the Elantra is a perfect point A to point B means of personal transport. Thanks to these qualities, the Elantra is now celebrating 10,000,000 vehicles sold to date.

Since 1990, when the first-gen Elantra arrived in dealerships, the nameplate got to move 10 million units in global sales. On average, that's 1,100 cars per day for 24 years. Now Hyundai can boast that it matches previous 10 million units sold records of popular machines such as the VW Golf and Toyota Corolla.
