BMW has diverted some of its attention away from the tried and tested 3 Series sedan formula and is instead focusing on the smaller niches like MPVs and four-door coupe, which it needs to take on Mercedes in the ongoing sales battle. However, the 3er is still a very powerful symbol of the German auto industry, making it a prime target for other, non German, companies who want a bigger piece of the premium segment.
One such company is Hyundai, who have a short list of premium models already. Their latest is the all-new Genesis sedan, developed at the Nurburgring, available for the first time with all-wheel drive and looking quite sharp even if we do have to say so ourselves. But the Genesis is not enough of a volume car for the Korean company, and just like Jaguar, they are thinking about a BMW 3 Series rival.
Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski has revealed the a 3 Series "rival' could be coming in the very near future. Without going into details he said "I think it's fair to say that within a couple of years there may be another premium [model]."
Zuchowski once again hinted that the ix25 crossover SUV might be coming to the US as well, saying that the company is "always looking at segments that we're not in right now that maybe we should be based on where the market's going."
The idea of picking a Hyundai over a BMW would have been unfathomable two years ago, but seeing just how much the BMW brand has been diluted I think it's fair to say that everything is up for grabs right now.
