For a while now South Korean manufacturer Hyundai has been announcing it is working on revolutionary technologies that will be deployed at conveniently undisclosed dates on equally undisclosed cars. Most of these technologies are advertised as being world premieres.
So is the latest innovation, a system that pairs machine learning with the already available ADAS systems (Advanced Driver Assistance System). Hyundai did this in order to allow the AI to learn the driving patterns of the driver, so that the experience of using these systems is tailored to the needs and style of each individual.
The systems the AI will try to customize the most while learning is the Smart Cruise Control deployed in Hyundai vehicles. SCC for short, it is the one that allows the car, among other things, to autonomously maintain distance from the vehicle ahead at a set speed.
This is because, says Hyundai, the same driver may press the accelerator pedal differently depending on circumstances, and the existing system does not provide all these subtleties. This results in drivers not using SCC because it is perceived as unstable.
“The new SCC-ML improves upon the intelligence of the previous ADAS technology to dramatically improve the practicality of semi-autonomous features,” said Woongjun Jang, VP at Hyundai Motor Group.
The AI takes into account the drivers’ preference when it comes to distance from preceding vehicles, acceleration, and responsiveness, analyzing 10,000 different patterns. The system is updated on a regular basis by the car’s sensors, allowing it to adapt on the fly to any of the driver’s patterns.
Hyundai did not say how far along it is with researching this new technology, nor was it very explicit when it comes to when we’ll get to see it deployed and on what cars.
