Hyperloop Technologies Becomes Hyperloop One, Wants to Take Over the World

Things are heating up in the world of Hyperloop, the new transportation method envisioned by Elon Musk (and science fiction writers and futurologists before him) that sees a pod-like vehicle travel through nearly airless tubes at speeds close to that of the sound.

In just a few years - can't be more than two - several companies have taken on themselves to make this apparently crazy idea a reality, and they are now on the last stretch towards performing the first full-scale test runs. One such enterprise is was called Hyperloop Technologies Inc, the Los Angeles-based company that announced yesterday it would, from now on, be known as Hyperloop One.

And everybody breathed a sigh of relief. Keeping track of which company did what was made extremely difficult by the fact that there was another one called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, so differentiating between them was like trying to guess the right name for the neighbor's twins: most of the times, nothing more than a coin toss.

Keen on setting itself apart from the competition, Hyperloop Technologies changed its name to Hyperloop One, and on the same occasion, it made a few more important announcements. As if the fact that it will be testing its propulsion system today for the first time weren't enough, the company also talked about the $80 million it managed to gather from donations and sponsorships, as well as the partnerships it struck with major firms specializing in engineering, infrastructure, architecture, and transportation.

But perhaps the most important aspect of Hyperloop One's communication was that it stated very clearly its intention of going global. Some of the partners we mentioned earlier come from Europe (countries like Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Finland or Sweden), and if Hyperloop One doesn't get the support it needs from the American government, nothing will keep it from launching its first route on the old continent.

The company announced the launch of Hyperloop One Global Challenge, a platform devised to "harness the most creative minds in making Hyperloop a reality." It will offer an opportunity for everyone (individuals, companies or governments) to come up with proposals or solutions on ways to move forward the project that aims to develop a clean, fast, and completely new means of transportation.
