Hybrid US Government Vehicle Fleet: 5,600 More

The hunger for hybrid vehicles, as well as the need to set an example for fleet owners has made the US government order an extra 5,600 hybrid vehicles, thus doubling the number of such vehicles in use with various US agencies.

"We're going to lead by example and practice what we preach: cutting waste, saving energy and reducing our reliance on foreign oil," president Obama said when announcing the order.

The new hybrids are meant for the US General Services Administration (GSA), who will replace 5,603 cars and trucks in the federal fleet with fuel-efficient hybrids. The US hopes to save 7.7 million gallons of gas, or 385,000 barrels of oil by replacing its fleet. In addition to GSA, the Department of Energy (DoE) will replace 753 vehicles with hybrids.

The announcement of the purchase comes just in time for the approval of the new national tailpipe emissions limits, scheduled for today.

"Tomorrow, after decades in which we have done little to increase auto efficiency, those new standards will be finalized, which will reduce our dependence on oil while helping folks spend a little less at the pump," Obama said according to the source.

"So my administration is upholding its end of the deal, and we expect all parties to do the same. I'd also point out: this rule will not only save drivers money; it will save 1.8 billion barrels of oil. That's like taking 58 million cars off the road for an entire year."
