Hybrid CanAm Spyder Debuts in Canada

After bringing it to New York, Minneapolis and Chicago, the CanAm Spyder hybrid roadster concept is to face the public for the first time in Canada during the Montreal Motorcycle Show. The event will take place at the Convention Center from February 25 to 27 in Montreal, Quebec.

BRP announced the four-year research and development project for a plug-in hybrid electric version of the CanAm Spyder RS roadster last December, in partnership with the Centre de technologies avancees BRP-Universite de Sherbrooke and with funding from the Government of Canada's Automotive Partnership Program.

“In 2010, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) adopted a ruling that permits them to issue a certificate allowing people to drive three-wheeled vehicles as long as they hold a Class 5 driver’s licence (passenger vehicle) and have attended a seven-hour training course given by a recognized motorcycle driving school,” a company statement reads.

The hybrid roadster will be equipped with an electric motor, lithium-ion battery and the Rotax 600 Advanced Combustion Efficiency (ACE) engine. This engine is currently used in some models of BRP’s 2011 Ski-Doo snowmobiles. With 8 l/100 km (29 mpg), it is the most fuel-efficient engine in the snowmobile industry.

BRP aims for the hybrid roadster to be 50% more fuel-efficient than the current CanAm Spyder RS roadster with comparable acceleration and a total range of 600 km (375 miles). It will also cut CO2 emissions by half.

Over the next four years the CTA will produce three generations of prototypes and their components. The final product must pass the test in terms of performance, reliability, durability, and economic mass production. Any technological innovations will be potentially transferable to other types of vehicles and products.
