Hummer Looking for New HQ

With the sale of Tengzhong the brand still in the air, Hummer is now shopping for a new headquarter, for it to use as soon as it is spun off from GM. According to Hummer spokesman Nick Richards talking for the Wall Street Journal, the new HQ is expected to be located at either a refurbished location in Detroit or in a northern suburb of the city.

But the options Hummer is considering are not limited to Detroit, nor to Michigan for that matter. The manufacturer is looking for sites in Tennessee and South Carolina as well. Of course, Detroit still has the best shot at becoming the Hummer-Tengzhong HQ, thanks to both its image as the center of the US automotive industry and the fact that there are thousands of white-collar workers looking for a job.

According to Hummer, some 300 new jobs will be created at the future site, for departments like design, marketing, engineering and distribution. Additionally, 600 other jobs will be born in the surrounding component base and connected industries, according to a State of Michigan report.

The report is however unclear whether these positions will be filled by newly-employed workers or by those transferred from GM. The Chinese are heavily dependent of Hummer and its workers' know-how, because by itself Tengzhong knows just about "zero" about building cars; hence, the future company will rely on the work done in the US, even if some of the production may shift to China.

A deal between GM, Hummer and Tengzhong is yet to be struck...
