The British Transport Police is choosing to look on the bright and funny side of what they assumed was a “huge drug bust:” a suitcase packed with blue plastic bags with a white powder inside.
The incident happened last week, at London’s very busy Gatwick Airport, CNN confirms. The British Transport Police also tweeted about it, including a photo of the alleged drugs that were being transported by a staffer from Purezza, a vegan restaurant with establishments in Brighton and London.

At first sight, this did fit the bill: the drugs were stashed into blue plastic bags, which were packed in a suitcase. There were no labels and the staffer’s explanation seemed far-fetched enough to be fake. In the end, it turned out that he was telling the truth: he wasn’t hauling drugs, but flying with a transport of cake mix. Vegan, no less.

“huge drugs bust at Gatwick airport. In collaboration with @ukhomeoffice powders tested and discovered to be vegan cake ingredients. Please label your foods and bring samples of cakes next time you visit. #cakefine,” the BTP says on the official Twitter.

In response to those joking that all drug smugglers had to do to be let through to board a plane with a suitcase of drugs was to stick a “cake mix” label to the bags, the BTP stresses that all suspicious powders will be tested. Labeled or not – but labels do help.

“Officers were called to Gatwick Airport station at 1.34pm on August 28 after a suitcase was found containing 25 bags of powder,” the British Transport Police says in a statement for CNN. “Following a number of inquiries and tests, it was determined these bags of powder were cake ingredients for a vegan bakery. They were soon reunited with the owner, who has promised officers and staff a slice of cake in return.”

Also on Twitter, Purezza admitted to “having a hard time” with the cake mix transport and thanked the PTP for going easy on them. Officers are expected in Brighton for their free slice of vegan cake.
