HRT F1 Signs Yamamoto as Friday Driver

Japan will again have 2 drivers in the Formula One roster, as Sakon Yamamoto has been confirmed official test and reserve driver for Hispania Racing F1 Team. Although he probably won’t get to race for the Spanish team, he will however drive the car in the Friday practice sessions of each grand prix, helping the HRT F1 engineers to improve the car through the 2010 season.

As we’ve reported to you earlier this month, team principal Colin Kolles was looking for an experienced test driver to provide his engineers with valuable data on the F110’s behavior on track – given that both Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna are rookies in the series – through the Friday 3 hours of practice of each GP.

Yamamoto’s experience in the series is not that vast, but he did however competed for Super Aguri and Spyker F1 for an overall 14 grands prix between 2006 and 2007 – replacing various drivers at these two teams. After leaving F1 at the end of 2007, he moved to the GP2 Series, where he failed to make any winning appearances.

It is fantastic to be part of a new team and I hope I will be able to gather useful data whenever possible on Friday for the race drivers. I have seen how committed everyone at the team is and I feel the same,” said Yamamoto.

I am confident that his input into the development of our car will be useful and means another reinforcement of our team as the European season starts in Barcelona. We look forward to welcoming Sakon to the team and working closely with him,” added Kolles.

The news means Christian Klien has traveled all the way to China for nothing really, as the Austrian was also in contention for HRT F1’s spot.
