The 2020 GT-R Nismo has many upgrades like the turbo modifications taken from the GT3-spec car, the ‘R’ mode gear setting added to the 6-speed automatic gearbox, more carbon-fiber body panels and one of the most advanced braking systems out there .
The second generation Nismo is an unmistakable marvel of race engineering and blends the perfect streetcar with a track-capable GT race car perfectly. By using lighter materials and tuning the 600PS engine and transmission, the overall weight of the new model was dropped by 44 lbs. (20kg) while acceleration and handling were improved.
To further improve handling and help manage the tremendous power of the engine, the Nismo team needed better brakes. They turned to the manufacturer that supplies the brakes for their racing team to produce a state of the art, custom braking system for the new GT-R Nismo.
That manufacturer is Italian brake expert Brembo, a name that speaks for itself. Their logo can be seen on calipers of legendary cars and all over the racing world, from endurance racing to Formula 1 and IndyCar.
Nismo set out to make this car both the best driving road car, for a nice weekend drive down the French riviera or the Million-dollar Highway in the US, and the best race car for dismantling lap records on any given track.
The teams from both manufacturers got to work on developing the most effective and robust braking system, that would be efficient both in day to day, road conditions and the demanding, high-temperature environment of a race.
They came up with an amazing braking system that is to this day one of the most advanced systems on a road car and betters the GT-R Nismo in every way.
The first thing that comes into view when looking at the car from an angle or from the sides are the brake calipers. They are big, bright-yellow and beautiful, contrasting the dominant white and black color theme.
The color of the calipers was chosen not just for esthetic purposes, the high heat proof yellow paint can resist temperatures up to 220 °F (100 °C) and is also discoloration-proof.
In the front, the aluminum monobloc six-piston calipers grab on to a pair of huge brake discs. The carbon ceramic 16.14 x 1.5-inch (410mm x 38 mm) discs are some of the largest ever fitted on a factory car. The pads are made from carbon and have been perfected for even piston pressure distribution.
In the rear, Brembo fitted similar carbon ceramic discs with a diameter of 15.35 inches (390mm) that are stopped by a smaller, monobloc four-piston caliper, with a slimmer design, to make room for the 20 x 10.5-inch rear wheels.
The rotors are made from a mix of carbon and silica carbide which literally makes them as tough as diamonds. They use a bell made from high-strength aluminum.
Brake pads are made from carbon and are developed with the aim of having perfect, even piston pressure distribution when braking.
In total, the bespoke brake system cuts 35 lbs. of weight from the previous model. A lighter, rigid, durable and heat proof system improves the overall handling and agility and makes a huge difference, especially trough corners.
