Because Toyota had to cut some corners when creating the affordable GT 86 or Scion FR-S, some might find its interior a bit dull. But you can change that with a bit of imagination and some extra money.
And one of the easiest way to spruce things up in the FR-S/GT 86’s cockpit is to paint or Plasti-Dip some of its trimming panels. They can be removed in a jiffy and easily put back on, so here are some tips on how to do it.

First of all, you’ll need a flathead screwdriver and some paint or Plasti-Dip. We don’t encourage you to repaint anything with a brush though, so before starting this operation make sure you have access to spray gun, or buy paint in spray cans.

Also if you don’t want to damage the plastic trimmings when you’ll pry them out with the screwdriver, try and put some tape over its end.

OK, the easiest trim pieces you can take out are those on the door handles, the rings on the side air vents and those two large pieces on the dashboard - one in front of the passenger and one on the middle surrounding the infotainment system. The gear shifter surroundings can also be removed but here you’ll have to work a bit more to disconnect the buttons’ electrical connections, the gear knob and the leather sleeve.

For the door handle and ring pieces all you need to do is gently stick the screwdriver on one of its sides and pry it open. For the dash panels you won’t need the screwdriver anymore because they are big enough to be grabbed with your hands. So grab their lower part and push upwards.

Same goes for the shifter surrounding - grab it from underneath the ring and pull up. Now repaint using whatever you like, let them dry up well and then mount them back just the way you took them out.
