Usually, we don’t recommend taking out the steering wheel out of your Toyota GT 86 or Scion FR-S and replace it with something aftermarket. And the reason behind this is that you will loose the airbag.
However, if you’re transforming your FR-S/GT 86 into a drift car, you will also have some racing seat harnesses, so the risk your head hitting the steering wheel in case of a crash is pretty small. So, in this case you’re allowed to mount a competition airbag-less steering wheel.

The video here show how to install a NARDI steering wheel, but the principle should be the same for other ones as well. In fact, the hardest par it getting the original one out. You’ll need flat and Phillips screwdrivers as well as a set of sockets and a ratchet with extender.

For safety reasons first you should disconnect the electric battery. Next, grab a thin screwdriver and locate some holes on the back side of the steering wheel. Stick it in and see if there are some screws in there. Normally, you’ll just have to push and the steering front central section will come off.

Now, unplug all electric wires going in the central piece and put it away. Don’t be stupid and play with batteries near the airbag’s connections. The airbag is located right into that central piece you just took off. So store it safely and don’t fool around.

OK, now you should see a big central nut. Take the ratchet with extender and ask a friend to come and keep the steering wheel in place so you can unscrew the nut. Oh, forgot to mention - before starting this process, make sure the steering wheel is dead center.

After removing the nut, pull out the steering wheel, carefully not to damage the hanging wires. Maybe you’ll want the standard steering wheel at some point.

Good. Now, take the screwdriver again and disassemble the steering column plastic case. There are two screws facing you, after which you’ll need to pry it open.

You’ll also need to take that black round central piece apart, the one from which the wires are hanging. It has some clips around it, which you’ll need to undo.

With that out, simple put the new steering wheel harness on, bolt it down to the steering column and attach the actual steering. Check the video bellow for more.
