The oil pan's role on a Toyota VVTi or any other engine is to collect the lubricating oil falling from its components to be absorbed back by the oil pump and recirculated.
Due to its position at the lowest part of the engine block, the oil pan can get damaged by off-road obstacles such as big rocks or tree trunks. If the oil pan is heavily dented or has leaks, you should really consider replacing it, so here are some short tips on how to take it out and put a new one in. Make sure you have a set of tools and new replacement engine oil according to its specs. Also you'll need a jack or even better, a car elevator. Here are the steps:
  • Place the vehicle on an even surface and secure its position
  • If the oil pan is not leaking and you still have all the oil in it, start the engine and let it reach its normal functioning temperature
  • Turn the engine off
  • Grab a catch-pan and remove the oil pan's draining plug, to collect all the oil
  • Jack the car or elevate it and use a 10mm socket to remove all the bolts holding it in attached to the engine block
  • The oil pan might be glued to the engine so use a sharp solid object to pry it open
  • Now just apply the same type of glue on the new oil pan's rim and attach it back to the engine.
