We have to admit that what we’re about to show you has been lingering in our minds for quite some time now. However, we never had the balls to go right ahead and do it. That’s because of several reasons but the guys from Gadget Review did and we’re more than excited to show you their results.

So, when looking at an i3, its spec sheet and pricing you’ll notice that the juice from the battery might run out pretty quickly. Of course, the car was designed to be used solely inside big cities and therefore recharging it shouldn’t be a problem but, let’s say it becomes one, some day. What do you do, if you’re nowhere near a charging station and you’re out of battery?

Well, there are a couple of things you can do. Get the bus, call someone to pick you up or even walk if you’re not far from your destination. But have you ever thought of using a generator? That’s right, a good-old fashioned ICE generator…

As we were saying, the guys from Gadget Review did and they found out that you can actually charge the i3 from a generator. Thanks to its charging cord, the BMW can be charged from any kind of socket, including those offered by generators.

Sure, it took half an hour to get 4 extra miles but those miles can make a difference. They even tried fitting the thing inside the car and drive the i3 while recharging, similar to what the $4,000 range extender would do, but unfortunately (ignoring the asphyxiation dangers they exposed themselves at) the car wouldn’t start with the cable plugged in.
