How to Check and Refill Transmission Oil on 1991-2001 Toyota Camry

If you suspect your 1991-2001 Toyota Camry’s gearbox leaking oil, then you should check its level and refill it if it’s too low. However, you should go see a service if your gearbox is leaking oil, or find the leak and see if you can fix it. But here we’ll only take care of the checking and refilling part.

Checking the transmission oil level is the same as checking the one of the engine. You open up the hood, locate the transmission dipstick (the one on the right), take it out and see where the level sits.

However, for a better read, leave the car a couple hours on a flat surface with the engine off, to let the oil in the gearbox settle. Then, get a clean rag and wipe the dipstick’s end. Insert it back, leave it for a couple of seconds and take it out again so you can clearly see the oil level.

If the level is too low, you can add more right through the small tube in which the dipstick was inserted. Just grab a funnel that you don’t need to pour easier. Or make one out of a plastic bottle. However, pour small amounts of oil in the transmission and check it with the dipstick until you reach the right level. Putting too much is almost as bad as not having oil at all.
