The bulky old LS 400 was a very popular full-size luxury sedan in the 90s. However, you can modify the looks of one and drive it even today, as it is a pretty bulletproof vehicle.
If you buy a classic Lexus LS 400, one of the first things to do is to give it an engine maintenance if the previous owner haven’t done one recently. Apart from your average oil and filter changes you have to pay attention to the engine’s timing belt.

The timing belt is a crucial part in the engine’s functioning, as it synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft with one of the camshaft(s) which operates the valves. If this belt dies on you while you drive, the valves may remain opened and the piston will hit them, damaging the whole engine.

Replacing the timing belt on a Lexus LS 400 is not an easy job though, so if you have little to none experience with the spanners, you should get professional help. Also you will need a complete set of tools, lots of time and this step by step tutorial that you will find here.
