How to Avoid Dying Like an Idiot

Dying while riding a motorcycle has pretty high odds, whether we like it or not. I don’t want this so sound alarming in a way, but the odds of putting a sudden, definitive end to the ride while on two wheels are statistically higher than obtaining the similar result while playing badminton, curling or scrabble. One thing is even more obvious: making stupid mistakes makes everything much worse.

While missing out a high-points word on the scrabble board may leave you with some frustration to last a match, speeding way beyond one’s skills and running wide through a turn in front of an incoming car leads to a far worse outcome.

Honestly, I am quite happy to see this rider making it safely out of this exceptionally tight situation. Hopefully he watches this video over and over again in the next months and understands that the fact that he can do so is simply because of sheer, unbelievable luck.

Luckily, it seems like the chap froze when he realized what’s happening, and did not brake in mid-turn. Given his leaning angle and with his presumed lack of experience (riding an 125cc Yamaha), brakes would have most likely be fatal.

Some buddies of mine say that a low-side could have caused him to miss the car, but I guess that crashing at 100 km/h (62 mph) into a steel guard rail or flying into the crevice would have hardly been the best outcome for the day’s ride. Good to see him safe, anyway!
