There is no doubting that the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is an engineering marvel. Although most muscle car fanatics probably would have been happy had Dodge just stuffed the 707-hp supercharged V-8 into the Challenger, the automaker wanted to make sure this car performed as well on the street as it did on the track.
For this to happen, Dodge had to make sure the Hellcat Hemi was able to breathe properly and run at optimal temperatures regardless of whether it was racing, cruising down the interstate or stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Needless to say, this posed a unique challenge to engineers, but SRT recently broke down some of the modifications that were required to transform the Challenger SRT into the Challenger SRT Hellcat. To accommodate the most powerful engine Chrysler has ever built, the Challenger SRT Hellcat also received the “most-advanced cooling system that the Chrysler Group has ever offered in a passenger car.”
This started up front with a distinctive front fascia that was required to fit the massive intercooler. The engine features two cooling circuits: one to keep the engine temperatures in check and another to keep the air being force fed into the supercharger at optimal temps. For low-speed driving, there is a variable speed Smart-Fan, and the Challenger SRT Hellcat also gets a separate intercooler for models equipped with the eight-speed automatic transmission.
“The 6.2-liter Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat was developed for enthusiastic drivers who will seek out opportunities to use the extreme performance capabilities that this package has to offer. These could range from drag racing and road-course track days to the Autobahn. During the development cycle for this supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi engine, we knew that effective engine cooling would be critical to delivering sustained maximum output,” said Chris Cowland, Chrysler director of advanced and SRT powertrain.
In the end, Dodge and SRT managed to clear all of the hurdles necessary for such a powerful car, and it did so while keeping the overall aesthetics in mind. As if the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat doesn’t sounds mean enough, it definitely looks the part, too.
