Ever wondered how a gearbox is assembled? How about a gearbox that has only one speed? The BMW i3 uses such a transmission and now, you can see how it’s made thanks to their latest video posted on Youtube.
The Bavarians really stand behind their own and, to prove that Ludwig Willisch’s claims that the i3 is the most eco-friendly car produced in the world right now is correct, the BMW Group decided to post some videos of the production process.
Amongst them, I found one that’s particularly interesting. It’s about the production process of the much-praised transmission used on the new EV. After hearing so much about the one-pedal driving the Munich-based company is marketing so much, seeing exactly what’s inside that ‘box’ became a must for me.
The whole process looks extremely simple: press-fitting the bearings and the joining shafts, teeth combing, joining the wheel set inside the housing, applying sealant (by a robot), bolting the lid and sealing the whole thing. Doesn’t sound that complicated, does it? Furthermore, it seems like it was done in under 5 minutes, making the process seem like a walk in the park. Check it out!
