How Does 30 KM/H Zones in Paris Sound to You?

The future doesn't look too bright for the inhabitants of the Frech capital, Paris. Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor who came up with the set of controversial rules to help reduce pollution, and that banned a lot of vehicles from entering vital areas of the city, has done it again.

She wants to extend the areas with the 30 km/h (18 mph) speed limit, and by a rather hefty percentage. The attached photo is reportedly sourced from the Paris City Hall and it shows both the existing zones and the ones that should become effective shortly.

Accidents at 30 km/h are easier than those at 50 km/h

One of the reasons behind such a move is funny, to say the least. Reportedly, Paris City Hall representatives said that the 30 km/h limit has a lot to deal with safety, as observations revealed that accidents that occur at 30 tend to yield a less deadly outcome than those happening at higher speeds, namely, 50 km/h, according to motorbiker.

Honestly, if this is the logic behind Mme. Hidalgo and her counsellors' ideas, maybe she should ban all vehicles from Paris, or impose 5km/h (3 mph ) restrictions to bicycles and even pedestrians. That is, because some people walk really fast and can become dangerous, let alone the fact that they tend to breathe more and thus consume more oxygen.

It's not exactly sure how Anne Hidalgo will fare in what's left of her mandate, that, by the way, has only begun in March last year. But the unrest in the ranks of both drivers and riders is growing. France has a neat record of public actions and civic insubordination that include strikes and blocked roads...

Even though, at 30 km/h, the roads will most likely become blocked by themselves.
