Knowing how to drive a stick shift today is kind-of an useless trick to most people. These days most people prefer automatic gearboxes both for their improved fuel consumption but also because they are more comfortable and easy to use.
However, if you really want to call yourself a driver, you should at least know how to use a stick shift car. Road & Track’s Brett Berk decided to share his experience with the world and revealed how he learnt to drive stick.
It wasn’t like in the movies, where the father takes his son into the barn, presents him to an old Mustang, rebuilt from scratch (eventually a Mach 1) and sits the kind behind the wheel, after which the teen immediately starts driving like a pro. No. Unfortunately for Brett, his dad wasn’t around and he had to get his own car, with the money he raised delivering pizzas. That’s how it really happened because that’s how life is.
So, he had to learn it on his own, on one of the best cars he could possibly choose: a 1973 BMW 2002. A brilliant car and an odd choice, when his colleagues went for newer, domestic, cars.
