Big. Very big. For a couple of years now, BMW has been taunting us with increasingly bigger grilles on its newest models, as if this was the element that could put the Bavarians ahead of the competition in some way. The latest BMW model, the new 4 Series that was introduced earlier this week, is no exception.
The new look of the 4 Series was already previewed on the Concept 4, so we pretty much knew what to expect. Yet, seeing the new version of the car next to the one it is going to replace is still a shock.
Somehow, the overall shape of the car’s front end hasn’t changed. BMW managed to keep the same aggressive look of the 4, while giving it a kidney grille that no longer expands horizontally to the sides, but vertically toward the hood and the lower part of the body.
Each lobe of the new kidney is larger than it has ever been on the model, and as a subjective note, it doesn’t look as bad as we might have expected. And that’s despite this grille being the largest ever put by a BMW on a production car.
The extreme makeover seen at the front is not mirrored elsewhere on the car. The rear received just minor upgrades, mostly visible around the taillights and the twin exhausts. The same thing can be seen from the side, where there are just minor stance changes and little else, except maybe for the dissapearance of the Hofmeister kink.
Just like the front end, the interior is another story entirely compared to the 2018 variant of the car. The new 4 Series shows new screens, a new choice of materials, a redesign of the center console, and a new interpretation for the steering wheel.
Engine-wise, the new 4 Series has something up its sleeve for all types of customers, starting with the usual gasoline engined versions and ending with mild-hybrid systems fitted on all diesel powertrains.
