Riding and driving beyond one’s skills is probably one of the most important causes which lead to accidents, so it’s only natural seeing states around the world trying to curb the loss of human lives and the increasing costs covering property damage and medical care.
This anti-speeding campaign comes from Europe, and to be more specific, from Belgium, a country with solid tradition in road racing, but nevertheless, this fact has nothing to do with people being killed in car and motorcycle crashes.
Unlike the extremely explicit Australian TAC campaigns aimed at making the roads a safer place, the Belgian one relies on the huge emotional impact of having invited some people at what could be their own funeral, after dying in an accident caused by excessive speed.
I’m not sure whether the “symbolic dead” are simply actors or actual difficult drivers or riders, but I guess this makes no difference, as the message of the video is universal and can be applied to any motorists around the world. The Belgian Institute for Road Safety, who is the author of this "Go For Zero" campaign, asks that viewers share this video with their speeding friends, bikers and drivers alike, and hope they’ll drop several mph.
The current annual speed-related death rate in Belgium is around 300, and the state is trying to reduce it to zero. A far cry, I’d say, but well worth trying. Make sure you hit the Captions button on the Youtube bar for English subtitles.
