Honda US Back at Full Throttle in August, Civic Output Still Affected

Following one of the worst natural disasters in Japanese history, local auto makers and parts suppliers have been fighting to get back on their feet and resume production at the pre-March 11 levels. For most, however, this proves to be a very difficult task.

Honda, one of the worst hit manufacturers, announced on Thursday that the North American production lines, affected by the shortage of parts from Japan, will resume production of most of the models this August.

All, except the brand new Honda Civic model. Because of the limited supply of key components, production of one of Honda's most desirable models will continue after August, for an unspecified period of time, at half capacity.

The rest of the models ¬− 4-cylinder Accord, CR-V and Acura RDX, and the V6 models, Accord, Accord Crosstour, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, Acura TL, MDX and ZDX − will resume the normal output one by one, until Honda is back at full throttle.

"The light at the end of the tunnel is glowing brighter for us, represented by this significant improvement in our production situation," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. "Throughout this crisis, Honda has been fighting to achieve a speedy recovery, while maintaining a focus on our longer-term plans for continued growth in sales and production in order to meet the growing needs of our customers."

In the aftermath of the March 11 disaster, Honda was the second hardest hit automaker. The company has only two factories in Japan and managed to open both of them soon after the quake and tsunami, but the production low rate might have cost it a total of 58,000 vehicles in the domestic market.
