Honda Unveils Insight Production Model

Honda recently published a photo showing what seems to be the production model of the second generation Honda Insight, but no technical details were actually provided. Initially displayed at the 2008 Paris Motor Show for Europe and at the Los Angeles Auto Show for North America, Honda Insight is due to arrive in production in April 2009, with the Japanese manufacturer planning to sell about 200,000 units per year.

As you can see in the photo attached to the article, Honda Insight sports a Prius-like rear end with the same front showcased by the concept model. But even so, the new Insight is said to include the most advanced hybrid technology ever developed by the Japanese carmaker, providing advanced battery autonomy with moderate engine performance.

Feature highlights include 1.4-liter i-VTEC petrol engine, the same used on Jazz, but obviously concentrated on fuel economy and environmentally-friendly features. The Insight is capable of running at up to 31 mph in full electric mode, with a fuel consumption of 65 mpg and emissions of 100 g/km, according to figures provided by Car Magazine Online.

Even though the Japanese company posted this exclusive photo on its official website seeking for feedback, the messages posted by visitors are mainly negative, with most of them criticizing the design of the production model. Here are a few messages posted by users on Honda's website:

The concept looked fantastic. The production model looks sad and tired. I was interested and signed up for the list - now I am just going to stick with what I have. - Brad M

The concept car really looked exciting. The production model has lost all the excitement. It will still sell well, but Honda will miss a lot of folks that are looking for a mixture of excitement and fuel economy, of which I am one. - Carl C

The concept car looks far more exciting than the production model, which appears to be a Prius redue. HONDA: take a leap of faith and produce a car incorporating the style of the concept version and you will sell millions upon millions! - Mac P
