Honda UK Announces Start of 2012 Civic Production

Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd (HUM) has announced that mass production of the new Civic hatchback for the European market has started today, December 19th. The British subsidiary says it will hire an additional 500 jobs will be created in oder to keep up with demand that’s expected o rise in 2012.
The announcement seems strange, since most automakers believe the European market will shrink next year, but Honda Europe’s president Manabu Nishimae has stated they are “committed to building cars and engines in Europe with Swindon at the heart of Honda's European manufacturing activities and this is further demonstrated today with the launch of the New Civic.”

Still, the new Civic is not as radical a departure from the old model, since it’s actually a heavily reengineered version of the old model, much like the Golf VI is to the Golf V. The only real option if you want a refined car that still goes is the top-of-the-range diesel, but a more economic 1.6 oil-burner has also been announced for 2013.

"The last three years have been extremely difficult for all of Honda's European operations. We have faced many challenges beginning with the economic downturn through to the two natural disasters in Japan and Thailand. Throughout this period Associates have remained committed and I am extremely proud of how they have responded to these challenges. We will build upon our new found strength and remain confident of our ability to achieve and succeed in the future," admits Honda Motor Europe President Mr Nishimae.
