Honda Shows Electric Mk1 Golf You Never Knew You Wanted

While Volkswagen is trying to balance its heritage with the electric future we are undoubtedly facing, Honda straight up took a Mk1 Golf and turned it into a compact electric hatch. And you know what? Sometimes the second-party iPhone accessories are way better than the originals.

Raised eyebrows aside, this car is refreshingly cool. Of course, the styling comes from an ever when metal stamping was rudimentary, but it's been given a modern flair. For example, the simple flat grille is made of perspex, like on the old Civic hatchback. The fenders are flared, and there are no mirrors.

Like most other manufacturers, Honda has figured out that EVs need bespoke bodies and a unique angle in order to attract customers. Rebodied jobs like the Fiat 500e just aren't going to cut it.

Built on a new platform, the model is equipped with a lightweight battery and integrated heat management system. However, Honda hasn't built many EVs until now, so it's keeping all the specs a secret for now.

You gain access via two large coach doors a la Rolls-Royce Wraith. The interior is a blend of old and new. So, for example, the bench goes right across, but the dashboard is one long screen, bigger even than what Mercedes has. There are also two slightly smaller screens integrated into the doors.

Why show it in Europe? That's a very good question. Most Honda concepts come out in Tokyo, Detroit or LA. But this one previews a production car which in 2019 will become the first Honda EV sold in Europe.

With just two years to go, it's frustrating that we don't know anything about the car except that it looks the way it does and is about four inches shorter than a Jazz/Fit.

“This is not some vision of the distant future,” said Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo in presenting the concept. “A production version of this car will be here in Europe in 2019.”
