After confirming that Italian driver Gabriele Tarquini and Portuguese driver Tiago Monteiro will be driving for Honda’s WTCC effort, the Japanese manufacturer is now showing off the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine which will be powering its Civic for the last three races of this season and the whole 2013.
While details are scarce, we know that WTCC rules forbit variable valve timing and variable intake geometry, so the engine should be pretty basic when it comes to technology, but it should still match its competitors’ 300-ish hp ratings.
Currently in Italy, the car is being modified and prepared for the WTCC championship by JAS Motorsport - the same people who did a rally car version of Honda’s Jazz. The WTCC-spec Civic will get its first official outing in October (19 - 21), when it will be raced at Suzuka, in Japan.
