“For me the reference point is BMW and the job they have done, it is pretty impressive. They have still to continue their climb but I think if we as a team achieve the competitiveness BMW manage to we will be quite pleased. We have the resources we need, we have got lots of clever people so I think it would be overoptimistic to think we can challenge for the championship next year but we have certainly got to be looking a lot, lot better than we are today,” admitted Brawn.
Nevertheless, Brawn insisted that all team members should continue working full time on the 2009 package in order to get Honda back on the scoreboard in 2009.
“The potential for a team in our position to move up depends on the job we do and the job everyone else does. I recall years at Ferrari where we had fairly modest cars but everyone else was doing a terrible job, and I can remember years where we had fantastic cars and so did everyone else so it was a real challenge,” continued Honda's team principal.
Honda managed to score a single podium in their last two Formula 1 seasons, thanks to Rubens Barrichello's run at Silverstone this year. The Brazilian finished the race in 3rd place, scoring almost half of Honda's points for the entire season (14). The Japanese manufacturer ranked a disappointing 9th overall in the constructors' classification, being the last of the scoring teams at the end of 2008 (as Force India and retired Super Aguri failed to win a point last year).
