Honda's Nano Tech, First Step Towards...What?

Honda announced today it managed to achieve metallic state for carbon nanotubes, a pre-requisite for future applications of the technology. Honda Research Institute, together with the Purdue University and the University of Louisville have announced the first results in the development of electricity-transportation capable nanotubes.

According to the initial findings, the electricity can be transported by the carbon nanotubes (a hundred thousand times thinner than a human hair) faster, farther and with less losses. A great news for EVs...

Our goal is not only the creation of new and better technologies and products, but to fulfill Honda’s commitment to environment sustainability,” Hideaki Tsuru, Honda Research project director said.

This is the first report that shows we can control fairly systematically whether carbon nanotubes achieve a metallic state. Further research is in progress with the ultimate goal to take complete control over grown nanotube configurations to support their real world application,” Avetik Harutyunyan, Honda's principal scientist added.

Of course, the applications for nanotubes are endless and Honda knows it. That is why, so far, no initial final goal has been set for the research.

After the problem of the metallic state achievement has been solved, Honda will now continue and look into how the technology can be adapted to sustain its environmental program. Unfortunately, we will most likely witness the results of this research several decades from now.

Our finding shows that the nanotube configuration which defines its conductivity depends not only on the size of the metal nanocatalyst used to nucleate the tube as was previously believed, but importantly also is based on its shape and crystallographic structure, and we learned to control it,” Harutyunyan added.
