With weeks before one of the toughest cross-country rallies kicks off in Lime, Peru on January 5th, Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) announces a three-rider line-up for Dakar 2013. The trio trying to bring back the glory for Honda is formed by Portuguese Helder Rodrigues, Argentinian rider Javier Pizzolito and US racer Johnny Campbell.
Things went amiss for HRC riders Felipe Zanol and Sam Sunderland who got injured in pre-Dakar tests in the Mojave Desert, US and they will not be part of the 2013 rally team. It's really disheartening, especially as they had both been riding in the Morocco Rally and provided extensive advice on bikes' performance and needed setups.
So instead of the 5-rider team Honda had announced in October, they have to make the best they can with only three. This is going to be a truly great opportunity to see how good the new CRF Dakar machine actually is when the going gets really tough.
