The current Honda CR-V is a very appreciated and understated alternative to the compact SUV / crossover market. In Europe, it is mainly bought with diesel power, as Honda’s 2.2-liter diesel engine does a remarkable job of pulling its not-so-light body around with ease.
Now, though, Honda have revealed the Euro-spec version of the new CR-V, which features a series of modifications from the US-spec version. Aesthetically, there’s little to differentiate the two, as the Euro car gets a mildly-revised front fascia, with headlights featuring in-built LED DRLs, as well as new side mirrors with integrated indicators. The new car’s interior, a big step forward (we say) compared to the current model, remains unchanged.

However, it’s under the bonnet where the biggest difference lies, as the Euro-spec car can be specified with a choice of two diesel engines, one of which is very new and it will substantially increase sales of the Honda Civic in Europe, once it receives the new powerplant.

We are, of course, talking about Honda’s new 1.6-liter diesel engine, which puts out 120 hp / 300 Nm (221.5 lb-ft) - excellent numbers for a small-capacity oil burner. The 1.6 will only be available on the CR-V with front-wheel drive, and if you want diesel and all-wheel drive, you’ll have to opt for the bigger 2.2-liter engine which features the same 150 hp as before.(
The third powerplant on offer in Europe will be Honda’s tried and tested 2.0-liter i-VTEC, which we tested on the Accord, a while back. The car will be available for purchase in October, and all Euro-bound cars will be made at Honda’s UK plant, in Swindon.
