Another massive Honda recall affects some of the most popular bikes in the last couple of years, the half-liter machines. So far, the recall has been confirmed for the Canadian and the US markets, but will most likely affect bikes sold in other regions of the world, as well.
The Canadian campaign has number 2015338, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is still expected to issue a reference number for the recall.

No number of affected bikes is known at the time of writing, but Transport Canada informs us that 3,376 units are expected to be inspected and serviced in the country.

A fuel level sensor malfunction can cause the bike engine to stall

Honda reports that the affected bike could, under certain conditions, experience a malfunction of the fuel level sensor. Namely, the fuel level sensor float arm holder may deform, and in more severe cases, even separate from the fuel level sensor body.

The separated float arm may come in contact with the positive and negative terminals at the base of the fuel pump and cause a short circuit. As a result, the short would blow the fuel injection, ignition or even the main fuse of the affected motorcycles and cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Upon notifying the customers, Honda dealers will replace the fuel level sensor free of charge.

Model year 2013 through 2015 motorcycles are expected back in the dealerships, under a "do not sell" ban for the retailers. As we said, only 500cc bikes are affected, and this means the CB500F, CB500FA, CBR500R, and CBR500RA models, as following:
  • 2013 CB500F – All Units
  • 2013 CB500FA (ABS) – All Units
  • 2014 CB500F – All Units
  • 2014 CB500FA (ABS) – All Units
  • 2015 CB500F – Select VIN # Range
  • 2015 CB500FA (ABS) – Select VIN # Range
  • 2013 CBR500R – All Units
  • 2014 CBR500RA (ABS) – All Units
  • 2015 CBR500R – Select VIN # Range
  • 2015 CBR500RA (ABS) – Select VIN # Range.
You can always get in touch with Honda directly and verify your motorcycle's VIN prior to contacting your dealer.
