Honda Recalls 2001 Accord, Civic Due to Faulty Airbag

Japanese automaker Honda is recalling Accord and Civic in the United States after discovering that an inflator module could deploy the frontal driver airbag for no reason. The recall only affects the Accord and Civic model year 2001, according to a notification published on the official website of the National HIghway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"Honda is recalling model year 2001 Civic and Accord vehicles," it is mentioned in the advisory. "The driver's airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure. If an affected airbag deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture."

Obviously, an airbag deployed from nowhere could mean nothing more than an increased risk of a crash and injuries to all occupants. According to the NHTSA "metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material possibly causing injury to vehicle occupants."

However, even if your car is now out of warranty, dealerships will replace the airbag inflator at no cost. An owner notification schedule is yet to be provided.

The 2001 Honda Civic represents the seventh generation of the car which brought only little visual modifications over its predecessor. Nevertheless, it boasted a roomier interior, mostly thanks to a flat rear door and the 3-door hatch received the Si trim level in the US which was also available on the coupe.

The 2001 Honda Accord was the sixth generation as well, with the car being a bit longer than the previous version but also narrower. It sold in sedan and coupe versions in the US, while in Japan the estate was very popular.
