Honda Pulls The Plug On The CR-Z In The Name Of Clarity

Honda’s CR-Z hybrid coupe was never a sales success, and now it has been removed from the brand's portfolio. Unfortunately for the Japanese automaker, their hybrid reinterpretation of the legendary CRX never caught the spirit of the original model.
Recently, Honda has confirmed plans to stop production once the last MY2016 car leaves the line. Since we are past the half of June, Honda will only make the CR-Z for a few more days, and then switch to another model.

As company officials have explained, the CR-Z will not receive a direct successor any time soon, and a 2017 model year vehicle is not planned.

Honda has detailed the decision by wanting to build and sell cars that will achieve more ample sales volumes, a job which the CR-Z failed to accomplish.

The CR-Z was a disappointment for two groups of Honda fans, as it did not provide the performance of the CRX, and it did not have a fuel economy expected from a small hybrid. Honda kept improving its little coupe, but the model did not capture the hearts of enthusiasts.

Its price did not make it a contender in sales charts, either, as it was more expensive than the Civic Coupe, Car And Driver reports. Some say that Honda made a mistake by not offering cheaper versions of the CR-Z without the hybrid drive system, which brought a significant weight penalty for the little coupe.

Earlier this month, Honda released the “Final Edition CR-Z,” a swan-song of its hybrid coupe with a manual transmission. The CR-Z was launched in 2010, and its sales figures peaked in 2011, then steadily dropped over the years.

Honda will not stand and weep the loss of the CR-Z from its range, but build more cars instead of it. The two products that will gain capacity in place of the defunct CR-Z are the 2017 Accord Hybrid and the new Clarity. The latter comes in a complete range, as the automaker has decided to offer it in plug-in hybrid versions, hydrogen fuel cell propulsion, and 100% electric variations.
