Honda Patents the Live Computer Instructor System

Even though Yamaha is making impressive progress with its MOTOBOT, Honda is not idling, either. In fact, the house of Tokyo has just filed a patent for the Live Computer Instructor, an interactive digital system aimed at helping motorcyclists become better riders.

The Live Computer Instructor System can be referred to as a personal, digital, smart advisor that shows motorcyclists how they can improve their riding style and be safe while at it.

You've probably guessed that the smart factor comes from a multitude of sensors that go on a bike and that provide a huge amount of data. We're talking about a gyroscope, an accelerometer, a steering angle sensor, a GPS locator, a speed sensor and a video camera.

The Live Computer Instructor is the perfect coach

This sensor array feeds data into a mini-computer and the human interface is a touchscreen display installed on the bike dashboard. The computer analyzes the data stream and is capable of making suggestions in real time.

The coolness of this system is that everything is happening live. Unlike having a human coach that watches his student perform on the track or road and then discusses what was cool and what went wrong, the Live Computer Instructor is offering solutions on site, during the ride. "Advice" comes for lean angle, throttle opening, braking power, position on the road, gear and so much more.

We can only do so much as to speculate that the Live Computer Instructor can be adapted to various riding scenarios, from helping new riders learn how to ride better and safer in certain conditions, to professional riders. Thanks to the processing capability, we suspect the system could also be adapted for fine-tuning circuit behavior, in terms of corner lines, braking points and so on.

Nice stuff from Honda, and a very promising piece of technology for both new and advanced riders. Now we can only hope it becomes reality.
